![]() ![]() It shows that even at this stage, SOAD still had some amazing talent and songwriting still buried deep inside of them. ![]() It’s melancholic quiet verses leading into it’s very angry and aggressive pre-chorus leading into a somewhat hopeful sounding chorus. It’s dark and at times almost atmospheric. “Holy Mountains”, the lyrical sequel to “P.L.U.C.K.” is a very underrated song. It’s catchier and more memorable than the previous track, but it’s still kinda bland and just sounds like a radio single they were forced into making for their label or something.” “Hypnotize” combines the poppier sound of this album and Mezmerize with the bands well know political lyricism. The powerful and emotional narrative in the lyrics and the beautiful guitar tone and vocal melodies make this one of System’s best closing songs. “ Originally appearing on Mezmerize as a very short intro, the full length version appears here as the outro. “And to close out Hypnotize, we have the full version of “Soldier Side”. Mezmerize and Hypnotize both debuted at number #1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, making the band one of the few to achieve this with two albums in the same year. Hypnotize was the last album System of a Down released before going on a four-year hiatus in 2006, and the band didn’t release new music for more than a decade, until late 2020 when they unexpectedly released two new songs. I'm not gonna lie, I'm a majoy Serj buff and was hugely put off System's last two records because of how much he took backseat.Hypnotize is the fifth studio album by Armenian-American heavy metal band System of a Down. I'm quite a big fan of Jet Pilot though, probably because it's System's lyrics at their most dadaistic.Īctually I'm listening to Serj's new album now and it's probably the most enjoyable thing I've heard since Steal This Album! (which I'm also a big fan of). It's an amusing track but a little novelty driven. 18 Kill Rock’N’Roll (Hypnotize, 2005) This two-and-a-half minute nugget that crops up as the third track on fifth album Hypnotize initially feels like a clichéd throwaway about the perils of. I'm not hot on Cigaro as I said, it just seems very simplistic and faux-heavy, but I really like Radio/Video, however.Īh ok, yeah Needles and Dear Dance are great tracks. ![]() could stand up against any System song for sure, great tune. (I didn't like Hypnotize, either.)ī.Y.O.B. Comes with a special insert that allows it to be joined with the album Mezmerize 'Hypnotize is a unique package that inserts into the Mezmerize package to form one cohesive package.' Recording location: The Mansion in Laurel Canyon, Los Angeles, CA and Akademie Mathematique of Philosophical Sound Research, Los Angeles, CA. As a whole, it just doesn't feel as varied or as focused as its predecessor or follower. Prison Song is cool by me too, and there are many nice individual songs. I was referring to Needles and Deer Dance, which are the second and third track, as the really great songs. And then there's tracks like Jet Pilot and Bounce, which make me feel they drained that pool dry on the debut. But those tracks on it which are clearly radio-friendly and often mentioned as fan favorites (Chop Suey!, Toxicity, Aerials) are IMO not as good as their counterparts on Mesmerize (B.Y.O.B. The second track is fantastic though, as is Forest which would have made a great single. Troy also said Prison Song was one of the few songs he liked from that album, it's probably my least favourite though. I'm not a great fan of Mesmerize/Hypnotize overall far too much of Daron Malakian singing and taking the front seat, he has an atrocious voice, and the songs are just a bit floppy sounding really. You sir are quite mad =P Cigaro is a pretty dire song if you ask me, and on the whole I wouldn't call Toxicity more radio friendly compared to the softer, rock-oriented Mesmerize. It drags on too long, though it opens with two really good tracks. I actually don't like Toxicity much, I find its more radio-oriented tracks safer and less exciting than on Mesmerize (you can't seriously say Chop Suey is better than Cigaro) and its straightforward bangers more boring than on SOAD. The former has some really catchy songwriting and plenty of variation, whereas the latter is fresh and heartfelt. For me, it's between Mesmerize and the debut. ![]()
